MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, has completed the Everybody Active Programme 5k running challenge.

Mayor Tierney was joined by his wife Cheryl and family on Derry Quay to complete the virtual event aimed at beginners and those relatively new to running.

An online weekly training programme guided runners through each step of the challenge while expert advice was available from Council’s Everybody Active coaches.

Proceeds from the event went towards the Mayor’s charity Aurora Counselling Services.

“The ‘Road to Running’ initiative was a great way to encourage people of all ages to get active over the summer and set themselves the challenge of completing their first 5k or 8k run,” he said.

“The restrictions to prevent the spread of Covid 19 have led to the cancellation of scores of athletics events locally so this was a great chance to give people something to prepare for.

“I enjoyed the training in the lead up to the event, it was a great chance to get outdoors and clear your head which is good for your mental health as well as your fitness.

“I’m delighted with the money we raised that goes towards my chosen charity Aurora Counselling Services and I’d like to thank everyone who contributed by taking part.”

Council’s EBA team designed a detailed weekly training programme that guided runners through each step of their training and coaches were on hand to offer expert advice if needed.

Sports Development Officer at Council, Ryan Porter, added: “This initiative followed the success of our EBA Family 2k Challenge earlier this year where hundreds of local families completed a 2k run during lock down,” he said.

“The 5k run targeted beginners and those relatively new to running while the 8k challenge was for those who have maybe completed a 5k and are now looking for the next challenge.

“There is still a limited time left to complete the 8k challenge which is perfect for those looking to complete a 10k or even a half marathon in the not too distant future.”

Road to Running t shirts and medals will be sent out to all participants at the end of the week.

Council’s EBA team will also be starting Couch to 5k programmes in local areas over the coming weeks, contact [email protected] for more information.
