Cllr. Duffy was speaking after Aontú Councillor Anne McCloskey opposed a motion backing the ‘Raise your Voice’ campaign aimed at raising awareness of and tackling sexual harassment and violence across the North.
Councillor Duffy said: “I was totally shocked when Aontú’s sole representative on the Council voted against the motion.
“It’s very clear now that Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín needs to clarify his party position regarding the very serious issue of misogyny in society.
“There has been great work done across this island to dismantle social and economic barriers which have for too long acted as obstacles for women.
“However, there is much more work needed to ensure that women feel safe, confident and comfortable in political and public life.
“It is therefore hugely disappointing to see a political party taking such a retrograde step and it simply isn’t good enough for the Aontú Party Leader to remain silent on such a serious issue.”
