MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Brian Tierney, has personally delivered indoor recycling bags to residents of the Balliniska development on Northland Road.
The bags aim to encourage householders to separate their waste at source in their homes before placing in their outdoor blue bins.
They will be rolled out to residents throughout the district in the coming weeks.
Mayor Tierney said he hoped the initiative would act as an incentive to householders to recycle more.
“It was my pleasure to deliver the new Recycling Bags to residents of Balliniska this week,” he said.
“I believe they will encourage people to separate materials at source which will have a knock on effect for the recycling rates of our entire Council area.
“I have already started to use the bag in my own home where it has encouraged my sons and daughter to be more conscious of what waste they can recycle and has saved us the trouble of taking going back and forth to our outside blue bin!”
Bernadine McCabe, Energy and Environmental Officer at Clanmill Housing Association added:
“At Clanmill we are committed to doing as much as we can to protect the environment and will shortly be launching a new strategy designed to minimise any adverse impact of our operations on the environment.
“Waste Management is an important part of this so we are delighted that our tenants are the first to receive their indoor recycling bags.
“Over the coming months we have plans for other initiatives at Balliniska to encourage good environmental practices and help everyone living there play their part in protecting our planet.”
