Perhaps most notably, the removal of PDRs for onshore oil and gas exploration.
This process was initially begun by Mr Durkan in 2016 during his time as Environment Minister, following opposition to proposed gas explorations in Fermanagh and Woodburn, County Antrim.
Said the Foyle MLA commented: “This is an area of policy long crying out for change and a process which I began in 2016 following a Call for Evidence on permitted development rights and public consultation.
“Unfortunately, progress on this vital legislation was delayed in the interim without a Minister in place.
“However, I am pleased that Minister Mallon has now taken up the mantle to see this commitment through to completion.
“The removal of PDRs for oil and gas exploration is a crucial move; in conjunction with removing barriers for recharging infrastructure to encourage the uptake in electric vehicles will assist a shift toward renewable energy and a reduction in carbon emissions.
“Renewed permitted development rights proposals including business property extensions and loading bays, will promote the growth of the economy which will prove vital as we move towards a post-pandemic society and the inevitable change in how businesses operate.”
Mr Durkan added: “Evidently, this area of legislation was outdated and no longer reflective of today’s challenges or environment-conscious landscape.
“I commend Minister Mallon on this pioneering package and hope these necessary proposals receive committee support next week.
“The SDLP remains steadfast in our efforts to create a greener, cleaner society that works for our communities while also supporting the economy.”
