SDLP Communities Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed a £430,000 support fund to assist the Sign Language Sector impacted by Covid-19.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased this tailored support has been announced to keep the Sign Language Sector afloat during this difficult time.
“While dealing with the impact of Covid has been tough on everyone, the implications have been particularly challenging for those within the deaf community.
“This financial assistance which is available to both organisations and self-employed language support workers, will be vital in the continuation of their critical role in supporting families with deaf children and the sector as a whole.
“The shift in the workings of our daily lives has seen much of what we do move online.
“This funding will support the sector to enhance online learning and to deliver new ways of supporting people, now and beyond this crisis.
“It is important that we make these opportunities as accessible as possible.
“The Sign Language Covid-19 Support fund is now open for applications and will close on December 1.
“I would urge those within the Sector to avail of this opportunity to sustain and maintain support for the deaf community.”
