SINN Féin’s Martina Anderson had called on Sainsbury’s to provide clarity to workers over their restructuring plans.
Sainsbury’s says it is to cut 3,500 jobs and close 420 Argos stores across the UK.
The Argos shop in the Richmond Centre which shut at the start of the Coronavirus outbreak will not reopen, says the company.
The Foyle MLA said: “Sainsbury’s have stores at a number of locations across the north including Derry so any restructuring involving the Argos collection points end of the businesses or any potential losses would be widely felt.
“Workers are rightly worried about this development.
“And they are worried about the impact it will have on their future.
“In the current climate, any fear of job losses is a blow to any worker and their families and increases pressure on attempts to build economic stability.
“I am saddened that the company has stated that the Argos shop in the Richmond Centre which closed at the start of the pandemic will not be reopening.
“Clarity must be provided to all workers involved and it is vital that workers’ receive their full rights and entitlements.”
