The report confirms that the Mobuoy Remediation Team has now received clearance to initiate the Procurement of an Integrated Consultancy Team to develop and finalise a remediation strategy for the site.
He said the move would also allow a business case to be completed to facilitate the appointment of a contractor to carry out the works.
It will cost £50 million to clean up the Mobuoy dump.
Councillor Fleming said: “This is another important step in ensuring that works can begin to clean up the Mobuoy Road site where almost two million tonnes of illegal waste were dumped over a number of years.
“The public and residents of the greater Eglinton who live right beside this dump will particularly welcome this news.
“It is expected that the Integrated Consultancy Team will be appointed by March of next year.
“Whilst dealing with the fallout of the dumping is vital, we also reiterate our call for a public enquiry to be held into how the Mobuoy site came to be contaminated.
“Holding a public inquiry is not to assign blame but to better protect our countryside and waterways for future generations.”
