THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation that NI Blood Transfusion Service (NIBTS) will facilitate blood plasma collections in Derry next week.
The move follows calls from Mr Durkan for a donation provision in the North West.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that my request for donation sessions to be held in Derry as part of the NHS Covid-19 Plasma Programme has been heard.
“Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service (NIBTS) have confirmed that blood donation appointments will be carried out in the Guildhall on Monday, November 30, Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2.
“Previously, volunteers to the programme had to travel to Belfast City Hospital to donate.
“Given the high levels of positive Covid-19 cases in the Derry/ Strabane area I had argued that the Department of Health were doing themselves a real disservice by not facilitating sessions here.
“Now individuals who contracted and subsequently recovered from COVID-19 can donate their plasma to support clinical research trials.
“Those who have registered their interest will be contacted this week to arrange an appointment for donation.
“Anyone who can’t make it to the sessions on the 30th, 1st or 2nd will be offered appointments for other sessions which will be held before Christmas in the north west.
“Unfortunately not everyone who registers their interest will be able to donate, as many are not yet 28 days post full recovery, which is one of the programme’s requirements.
“These people will be contacted again at a later date.”
Anyone who has tested positive for and recovered from Covid-19, and wishes to donate to this clinical trial can do so at: https://nibts.hscni.net/convalescent-plasma/
