The Foyle MP said: “I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Hugh McMonagle this morning.
“During the nine years that my constituency office was in Northside Village Centre, Hugh would regularly call in to share a joke, a few stories and wise words with my colleagues and I.
“Seeing the volume of messages on social media today remembering Hugh’s life and all that he has done for Derry City FC, it shows how much of an important figure Hugh was as co-founder of the Pride of Northside Supporters Club but also around Derry in general.
“Even though Hugh was such a mild-mannered person, he has played a very important part in the collective psyche of all Derry people.
“Hugh was present on Bloody Sunday where he and others carried the body of one of those murdered, Jackie Duddy, and is immortalised in the photograph which came to symbolise that tragic day.
“My thoughts are with Hugh’s family at this time and as they lay him to rest in the next few days.
“He will be sorely missed by all of us who knew him.”
