The move would bring the North’s organ donation legislation in line with other jurisdictions in the UK.
Said the Foyle MLA: “The continued shortage of organ donors in the North is deeply concerning and this opt-out organ donation system is one myself and others have been calling for, for a number of years.
“The opt-out system is the most reasonable option considering that despite continuous advertising and public awareness campaigns to encourage an uptake in people becoming organ donors, the sad fact is that these are patently not working.
“Providing a law for presumed consent donation, unless people indicate otherwise, will reduce the number of people who die waiting on organs.
“Last year 140 families said no to organ donation as they were unaware of their loved one’s wishes.
“Considering that just one donor could save up to nine lives, this is a colossal loss and frustrating reality facing the current 115 people on the transplant waiting list here.
“That’s 115 families subjected to the agonising wait and sadly, many people have died awaiting organ transplant.
“The proposed legislation on the opt-out organ system in no way undermines people’s faith and religious beliefs. Consultation with family members will continue and as the title suggests, individuals can opt-out of donation should they wish to do so.
“I want to also pay tribute to Máirtín Mac Gabhann, father of 4-year-old heart patient Dáithí, whose hard fought campaigning to date for increasing awareness around organ donation and in his fight to progress this legislation.
“This consultation is an important and necessary step forward.
“It will run for 10 weeks and will close on 19 February 2021.
“I would strongly encourage people to submit a response and have their voices heard on this life-saving cause,” added Mr Durkan.
