fhe consultation announced today by the Department of Health is open until 5pm on March 26, 2021.
Mr Durkan said this strategy is one step of many required to tackle poor mental health in our communities adding that much more investment is needed to prepare for the challenges post-Covid-19.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I welcome news on a public consultation on a draft Mental Health Strategy for the North and remain hopeful that tackling the issue of poor mental health within our communities remains a priority for the Department.
“Having attended many workshops on the development of such a strategy and as a passionate advocate on mental health and improving services here, I am glad that the hard-fought efforts of various individuals and organisations is finally bearing fruit.
“While it is good to see this public consultation finally being brought forward, it is just one step on a long road of action.
“A road which has been marred by delay after delay, not to mention three years of inaction.
“This ten-year Mental Health Strategy for the North has been a long time coming but I’m pleased to see movement on this vitally important piece of legislation.
“With consideration of a post-Covid context and the predicated rise in the numbers of individuals requiring mental health support, we need to ensure investment is directed where it is needed most, where people can access immediate help.
“I would urge anyone interested in the improvement of mental health services here to get involved and respond to this consultation.
“It is crucial we hear the voices of people right across our communities, to garner their experience and their expertise and in doing so we can create a fit for purpose system- one that works for all.”
