McLaughlin: BTEC students deserve clarity from Minister

SDLP Foyle MLA and Economy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

THE SDLP’s Spokesperson for the Economy Sinead McLaughlin has written to Minister Diane Dodds, urging her to cancel BTEC exams in 2021.

The Foyle MLA said this would ensure that students are treated equally to those studying for GCSEs and A-Levels.

In her letter, Ms McLaughlin wrote: “Dear Minister Dodds,

“Given that Minister Weir has cancelled all GCSE and A-level exams in 2021, I would urge you to afford BTEC students the same peace of mind and cancel BTEC exams for this academic year.

“While I appreciate that you have provided flexibility in allowing schools and colleges to decide whether or not to go ahead with exams this month, some constituents have described the incredibly difficult position this has put them in when schools have chosen to proceed with exams.

“They feel they still need to attend the exams so as not to disadvantage themselves, but also do not want to put the health of vulnerable family members at risk.

“Other centres have decided to postpone exams until June. However, this also risks increasing pressure on students, who will have to sit a higher number of exams in a short space of time.

“With GCSE and A-Level exams already cancelled this year, cancelling BTEC exams would help to ensure that there is a fair playing field for all students.

“Furthermore, I would be grateful if you could provide clarity on what the alternative arrangements will be. This would go some way towards alleviating the anxiety currently felt by many BTEC students.

“I look forward to your response.

“Yours sincerely,

“Sinéad McLaughlin MLA.”
