This consultation process is a key element of Protect Life 2 Strategy for Preventing Suicide and Self Harm in the North of Ireland, which was initially launched in September 2019.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that the pre-consultation process has begun for the long awaited, Protect Life 2 Strategy for Suicide Prevention.
“I lament the fact that this was not actioned sooner but am glad to see that work is finally underway to progress a much-needed framework for suicide prevention in the North.
“The North West has been designated as an area with one of the highest suicide rates across these islands. Incidentally, it is also one of the highest levels of social deprivation.
“Clearly, to buck this trend we need meaningful economic interventions to create jobs and improve the quality of life, alongside improved, accessible mental health services.
“I would encourage any person or organisation involved in the prevention of suicide to respond to this crucial consultation – it is vital those within our communities dealing with this reality day in day out, have their say in the design of future service provision here.
“A suicide prevention framework for the North is badly and sadly needed; a need that will become even more acute as we navigate the consequences of the pandemic.
“It is important that we have a fit for purpose provision to meet that demand.
“Input from those on the ground as well as adequate allocation of resources, is essential to ensure this vital piece of work has the impact we all want and need it to.
“I look forward to hearing from the Department what measures will be put in place to ensure we maximise the Protect Life 2 Stratgey’s potential to save lives and change lives.”
The pre-consultation starts on Monday 15 February and runs for eight weeks, ending on Sunday, April 11.
