SDLP leader Colum Eastwood has said it is “inconceivable” that Derry City and Strabane District Council has decided to increase the local rates this year.
In a statement, the council said: “After careful consideration Council Members have today ratified a recommended rates increase of 1.89% – the lowest ever increase in our Council area in almost 50 years.
“This will ensure Council can continue to deliver the expected standards of service & maintain positive growth.”
Said the Foyle MP: ““At a time when businesses and rate payers are struggling it’s utterly inconceivable that councillors on DSDC have voted to raise rates.
“Many will look at mounting bills when Conor Murphy seems set to return millions to the British Treasury as a slap in the face.
“I’m glad the SDLP opposed this move today”
