SDLP social justice spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed annual payments of £33,500 for individuals who lost their spouse or partner as a result of the contaminated blood scandal.
During the 70s and 80s, some 99 people from the North were infected with HIV or Hepatitis C, after receiving blood donations.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I hope the announcement of long-term financial security will be of some comfort for those individuals who lost loved ones as a result of the contaminated blood scandal.
“This announcement is in recognition of all the lives lost, lives destroyed and families affected by the worst scandal in the history of our health service.
“It is also testament to the unwavering efforts of campaigners who have fought for decades, providing a voice and seeking justice for the victims of this tragedy.
“It was their persistence in the pursuit of truth which uncovered the details hidden from the public, it was their harrowing testimony which has brought us to this point.
“This annual payment will never right the horrific wrongs experienced by these families.
“It can never compensate for the loss of their loved ones nor the impact this has had on their lives but I hope it will provide a sense of safety and assurance that bereaved partners have not been forgotten in the midst of this tragedy.”
