‘Unacceptable delay in Covid-19 testing for special schools’

Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has criticised the continued delay in implementing weekly Covid-19 testing for children and staff within special schools.

The Department of Education has explained the latest delay is due to issues with the delivery of testing kits.

Said the Foyle MLA: “It is very disappointing that Covid-19 testing, which was promised for pupils and staff at special schools has suffered yet another delay.

“Special schools here have been open for all pupils since the start of January yet only a limited number of staff are to be given priority for vaccination, a lamentable decision in itself.

“However, the announcement of weekly testing which was due to begin in February provided staff, pupils and parents with a much needed added sense of hope and security.

“It is unacceptable that this has once more been delayed until March 15.

“These are very vulnerable children, who staff work closely with on a daily basis- their protection and that of the staff, who play such an important role in their lives, should have been a priority.”
