Durkan welcomes improved accessibility in Foyle Springs

THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed the installation of dropped kerbs for the Foyle Springs area of the city.

Said the Foyle MLA: “Last summer, I was contacted by a family in Foyle Springs who are the parents of a young lad with a disability that greatly restricts his mobility.

“As a vulnerable person, his exercise was restricted to getting out for a short walk but this was proving difficult due to a lack of dropped kerbs in the Foyle Springs area.

“A standard kerb does not cause many of us much bother but for people with disabilities, elderly people and those with young children in prams, they are a nightmare.

“I am very pleased that, following representations I made to the Department for Infrastructure, dropped kerbs have now been installed throughout the area.

“This will make life a little easier for many and a lot easier for some.

“It is vitally important that accessibility is not an issue but particularly so in residential areas.

“People should have assurances that where they live and the pathways they traverse on a daily basis are usable for all.”
