“I wrote last year to the Planning Service in County Donegal asking them to reject this application on the grounds of its damage to air quality on both sides of the border.
“The planning application comes for decision this week and I again urge the authority to refuse the proposal.
“Derry and the surrounding area already have poor air quality and an asphalt plant would make this worse.
“Research on the impact of asphalt plants has shown significant negative health impacts as a result of toxins released by the plants.
“I have been contacted by a number of constituents concerned at these health effects.
“We must do far more to combat poor health quality as a result of air pollution.
“Approval of an asphalt plant would be a negative step at a time when we need to move forward positively.”
