A thug who kicked and punched a pensioner to the face, causing several fractures, in an unprovoked attack which was captured on CCTV, was handed a six year sentence this week at Derry Crown Court.
Damien Anthony McMahon (31), whose address was given at Moore Street in the Waterside area of the city, pleaded guilty to five charges arising from the incident in the early hours of January 22, 2020.
McMahon attacked his 69 years old victim after the man had refused to go with McMahon to a cash machine.

McMahon was sentenced to:
6 years imprisonment for Robbery
6 years imprisonment for Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent (concurrent)
12 months imprisonment for Common Assault (concurrent)
12 months imprisonment for Fraud by False Representation (concurrent)
12 months imprisonment for Fraud by False Representation (concurrent)
McMahon will serve a total of three years in prison and three years on supervised licence with the Probation Service.
Detective Inspector Jack said: “Damien McMahon followed his male victim to the front door of his home where he demanded money from him.
“When the victim refused to hand over the money McMahon assaulted him, knocking him to the ground where he kicked him around the head rendering him unconscious.
“When the victim was lying unconscious on the ground McMahon rifled through his pockets and rucksack and again kicked him to the head, before making off with the rucksack.
“I hope this sentencing sends out a clear message to anyone who thinks they can get away with this type of crime.
