THERE was further violence in Derry on Monday night.
A group of about 20 young people gathered at the site of a car which had been set on fire in Sperrin Park in the Waterside.
This was the seventh night in eight in which there has been violence in the city.
Business leaders and local politicians in Derry have warned that someone could be killed or seriously injured if the disorder in the city continues.
Following a meeting between politicians, business groups and local police commander Chief Supt Darrin Jones on Monday, manager of Derry City Centre Initiative Jim Roddy appealed for an end to the “ongoing cycle of violence”.
“It is clear that some of the young people who are involved in this criminal activity are unaware of the consequences of their actions and are being misled by adults with more sinister agendas,” he said.
“This violence is putting lives at risk.
“Together we feel we need speak out to ask those who are orchestrating this to stop now, before someone is seriously hurt or a life is lost.”
The Alliance party is seeking to recall the Stormont assembly from recess over the disturbances.
The motion states that the “Assembly notes with concern the violence on our streets over recent days and condemns without equivocation those involved” and calls for an “immediate and complete end” to the violence.
