Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin said: “I am delighted that the council’s planning committee has given planning approval for the Derry-Muff Greenway.
“The Greenway will be a significant cross-border project, which is part of a wider £11 million investment by the European Union.
“It has been heartening to see an increase in people of all ages out walking, cycling and enjoying the outdoors over the past year.
“This new greenway will further expand active travel provision in our city and Culmore and Muff residents will be able to take full advantage of a direct pedestrianised route into town.”
Cllr Angela Dobbins said: “I was very happy to have seconded this application. Last week’s site visit, which all member of committee assented to, was very beneficial.
“Genuine concerns for health and safety were raised and it is the committee’s duty to take these on board.
“The site visit was a valuable opportunity to address those issues.
“The scheme will be of great benefit to the Culmore area and its Donegal neighbours, enabling cyclists and pedestrians to get about much more safely.
“It will also encourage a ‘modal shift’ with more people choosing to cycle and walk instead of travelling by car.”
