Mr Durkan said the theme of nature is befitting of this year, quoting the great Aristotle, he agreed “there is something to be wondered at in all of nature.”
Mr Durkan in conjunction with the Mental Health Foundation has called on all MLAs participate in the awareness week as part of the #PinItForMentalHealth campaign by wearing a green ribbon pin, the international symbol of mental health awareness.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Mental Health Awareness Week should be a moment of reflection for everyone this year, an opportunity to put aside time for self-care and to reconnect with our natural world.
“This year has been one of the most tumultuous and challenging periods in living memory.
“Each and every one us has carried the burden of anxiety and sadly, in many cases suffered loss. Whether that be the loss of a loved one, of financial security or a loss of independence.
“A recovery period for our mental health should not just be a priority but a necessity.
“If we can take any positive from this difficult year, it has to be the reconnection with nature and the appreciation of the beautiful greenspaces on our doorsteps.
“For many, the imposition of lockdown has provided an opportunity to slow down the pace of daily life – to find the joy in the small things.
“People have taken the time to smell the roses, to take notice of the bird song and recognise the delicate balance of between our own lives and our natural environment.
“Embracing a greater connection to the natural world is a simplistic yet effective option which can work wonders for improving emotional well-being.
“However, I am under no illusion that nature this is the only answer to the mental health question. And it will be one of the biggest questions society faces as we navigate through the post-COVID landscape.
“Tackling mental health waiting lists was a serious concern long before the pandemic and demand will only increase in the months ahead.
“The Health Minister in partnership with his executive colleagues must focus on providing significant investment and an improved model of care, to allow people struggling with their mental health to access support as and when it’s needed.”
