And city manager Ruaidhri Higgins acknowledges that they’re taking on “the best side in the country” when they line up against the Dublin side on Saturday evening, May 15 (kick off 6 pm).
But he insists his side must approach the game in Tallaght with positive intent.
Derry have taken seven points from the new man’s first four matches in charge and while no doubt he would have taken that before he started, this one is as difficult as they come.
The ‘Hoops’ have been making a habit of scoring very late goals in recent weeks and are now back on top of the Airtricity Premier Division table. Victory over St Pats last time out means their unbeaten league run now stretches back 32 games.
“It’s a very difficult task but we have to go there and look to be positive,” said the City manager.
“I feel we have been playing well without always getting what we deserve so we have to stick at it.
“Obviously we know how much quality Rovers have and that includes some fantastic options in the final third of the pitch.
“We have to find a way to combat that threat and create chances for ourselves and that’s what we’ll look to do.
“The boys have all trained well this week and I have a full panel to choose from, although we’ll give Jack Malone a fitness test on Friday.”
The game will be shown live on WATCHLOI.
