Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that Minister Swann has confirmed that a new respite provision for Foyle will open in Autumn of next year and that work is underway to expand provision by September 2021.
“To date respite provision in the North West has been severely lacking – something which I have highlighted in recent years.
“On multiple occasions I have appealed to both the Western Trust and the Department of Health, on behalf of struggling families for improved and increased facilities in this region.
“This will be welcome news for many families of children with complex needs, as a crucial crutch for them to lean on.
“Particularly after the period of lockdown, as the pressures faced by these families have been further exacerbated with the closure and reduced capacity of these vital facilities.
“They have waited too long for suitable, and at the very least, available respite provision within their own city.
“I understand the Trust are also reviewing the current range of short breaks options for older people within the area as well.
“Overall this is positive news for the North West to look forward to the long overdue, necessary expansion and enhancement of respite services here.”
