MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Brian Tierney, has congratulated everyone involved in the Bastion Community Allotment after winning the My Chelsea Community Garden Competition.
The project, which was started by local community worker Jeanette Warke, was revealed live on BBC’s The One Show on Wednesday night as the winner of the prestigious competition, which is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Mayor Tierney: “I want to offer a massive congratulations to everyone at the Bastion Allotment, to the Fountain community, to Jeanette, and to all involved in this fantastic project on their well-deserved award.
“The allotment is a wonderful example of community spirit and of working together to turn an empty space into one that benefits everyone and that brings people together.
“Jeanette, who is the mother of our Deputy Mayor Alderman Graham Warke, is well-known for her dedicated community work, and I want to say well done to Jeanette for believing in this project and spearheading this journey.
“Well done also to the team of volunteers and to everyone who has joined in helping make Bastion Community Allotment what it is – an award-winner!”
