Said the Foyle MLA: “The current taxation system is not fit for purpose and is unfairly taking money out of the pockets of our cross border workers.
“Current rules mean that if a worker is resident in the south but working for an employer in the north then they will face ‘double tax’ on their income once they work from home.
“Similarly, those resident in the north and employed in the south incur double taxation after 60 days of work from home.
“This is unfair and could discourage working from home, disadvantaging cross border workers compared to other staff.
“In the south the temporary waiver of ‘double taxation’ for workers employed in the north needs to be made permanent and this is something Sinn Féin will continue to press the Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe TD on.
“Sinn Fein has written to the Fiscal Commission and asked that they look at ways of stopping this.
“It is important that this double taxation is ended so that workers across the island can avail of remote working on an equal basis.”
