The announcement follows Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon’s visit to Derry today to launch the opening of the shared pathway from Maydown to Strathfoyle.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I am so pleased that Minister Mallon has announced further investment for Strathfoyle Greenway and it is hoped construction work will begin next year.
“In doing so, she has reiterated her commitment to the North West.
“Investment in our greenways will be a key component in green recovery plan for the North. Today’s announcement in line with Minister Mallon’s prioritising of active travel, will no doubt be of immense value for our communities.
“It has been great to see people walking, cycling and generally being more active within my own constituency of Foyle, particularly over the past year.
“Ring-fencing investment towards greenway infrastructure will no doubt encourage the uptake in active travel which in turn will bring a multitude of benefits for the environment and people’s overall health as well as providing a huge boost for local communities.
“Strathfoyle greenway will be completely transformational for the city and its surrounding areas.
“I hope this continued focus on greenway infrastructure will kick-start a cultural change in how individuals choose to incorporate active travel into their daily lives.
“In doing so, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.
“I fought for this Greenway for many years and I’m genuinely excited to see work begin on this project,” added Mr Durkan.
