SINN Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has encouraged those worried in Derry about COVID symptoms to get tested to help stop the spread of the virus and its variants.
Figures revealed yesteday show that the number of positive cases in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area are starting to rise again.
Figures by the Department of Health showed there was a further 45 positive cases in the council area, a rise of 23 on figures given on Tuesday for Monday.
Over the past seven days there have been a further 164 COVID-19 cases in the Derry and Strabane area.
This means that since the pandemic started in March there have now been 13,018 positive cases within the council boundary – the third highest among all 11 councils in the North.
The rate of infection within the Derry and Strabane Council area has now risen to 108.8 cases per 100,000, which is still the highest in the North of Ireland.
And the Derry and Strabane infection rate is currently higher than any region in England.
Said the local Health spokesperson: “The spread of the delta variant of the COVID virus across the north is very concerning.
“Doctors have said that alongside the already known symptoms, those who test positive for the delta variant often have a sore throat rather than a cough as the main symptom.
“I would call on anyone in Derry with any symptoms to get a COVID test in order to help stop the spread of the COVID variant so we can continue with our pathway to recovery.”
