Speaking following a briefing from Minister Deirdre Hargey at today’s Communities Committee, the Foyle MLA said: “Today’s revelation that legislation to close the welfare mitigations loopholes has continually been brought to the Executive but not tabled, is completely disgraceful.
“The recent Executive Budget included funding to close the benefit cap and bedroom tax loopholes.
“However, we then faced a situation whereby the absence of legislation before the summer recess could render this allocation null and void.
“To now hear the accusation that the progression of this legislation was consciously delayed by one party within the Executive, is gut wrenching.
“This shows a complete disregard for vulnerable families and their children, and in failing to act, has treated them with contempt.
“In pursuing this policy of playground politics, certain quarters of this Executive are toying with people’s lives.
“Welfare mitigations legislation should have been prioritised from the outset – so many have fought since 2019 to close these loopholes.
“The failure to recognise the urgency of this issue means that 1,000 families here may not be protected from the worst of Tory welfare reform.
“That is just disgraceful.
“After hearing today’s claims, I cannot comprehend why, given this legislation is a New Decade, New Approach commitment, the Minister’s party did not raise concerns with the UK government.
“Why is protecting vulnerable families not a priority?
“It is vital the First and Deputy First Ministers push to get this legislation across the line immediately and protect families from being pushed into poverty.”
