THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has welcomed Health Minister Robin Swann’s new 10-year Mental Health Strategy.
He said the plans to begin the reform of the Northern Ireland’s mental health services would make a huge difference to those requiring treatment and called on Mr Swann to follow through on commitments.
However, Mr Durkan noted that the funding was not yet in place, with the Minister saying an investment of £1.2bn would be needed over the next 10 years.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Funding must be guaranteed to allow a complete transformation of mental health services here- you cannot put a price on good mental health.
“I welcome the publication of vital strategy which is needed now more than ever as society emerges from the devastation of Covid.
“It has been clear for some time that the way our health services deal with mental health is nowhere near good enough.
“Too many people have been unable to access treatment as and when they need it, while others languish on waiting lists for months and years in the hope of being able to speak to someone.
“I cannot stress enough, that quick and timely support is crucial when it comes to mental health matters.
“I hope today’s announcement will be followed by tangible results, which will promote good mental health for everyone as well as providing services and facilities for those who are struggling.
“Now is the time to focus on the implementation of this strategy rather than its content,” he added.
