McLaughlin said: “The obligation to hold and produce Green Card insurance certificates was a particular nuisance for Derry motorists, who travel across the border on a regular basis.
“I greatly appreciate the European Commission agreeing to a more flexible approach.
“This is a matter that I have been discussing with the insurance industry for many months.
“I am pleased that is now resolved.”
The waiving of the green card for Derry motorists was confirmed to the Foyle MLA in a letter from the Association of British Insurers.
In a letter to the ABI, the EU said: “The Commission has today announced a decision to waive the obligation to show the motor insurance Green Card for drivers from the UK.
“This will be particularly helpful for Northern Irish motorists crossing the border into Ireland.”
Alastair Ross of the ABI told Ms McLaughlin: “This is excellent news for motorists in Northern Ireland and something the ABI has been lobbying for before and after Brexit.”
Huw Evans, Director General at the Association of British Insurers said: “We have long campaigned for the UK to be part of the Green Card Free Circulation Zone so we warmly welcome the decision by the European Commission today. The Commission has taken a pragmatic approach on the matter.
“UK drivers will no longer need to apply for a green card through their insurer which will help reduce bureaucracy for drivers and road hauliers travelling between the UK and EU.
“It will be especially welcomed by motorists in Northern Ireland driving across the border to the Republic of Ireland.”
