SDLP Foyle MLA and Economy spokesperson Sinead McLaughlin

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has welcomed a new opinion poll from LucidTalk, on behalf of Queen’s University, Belfast.

Although the survey found Northern Ireland society is evenly split on the Protocol, 56% of respondents agreed that the Protocol provides Northern Ireland with a unique set of post-Brexit opportunities.

She said: “It is essential that while all politicians act in good faith to resolve the genuine problems associated with the Protocol, that we also engage positively in promoting the opportunities created by the Protocol.

“New investment has already arrived in Northern Ireland as a result of the Protocol, which gives businesses open access to both the UK Internal Market and the EU Single Market. Businesses in Northern Ireland have unrivalled advantages.

“These advantages form a core part of the SDLP’s Jobs Plan for the North West.

“I will be launching the consultation on the second part of that plan on Monday next week, focusing on the opportunities from our regional strength in renewable energy.

“The combination of the Protocol and massive renewable energy resources can lead to a big improvement in jobs and wellbeing in the North West.

“It is essential that we use the Protocol and its advantages for the benefit of our citizens.

“It is irresponsible for some politicians to talk down the opportunities while talking up the challenges.

“However, we must continue to work on overcoming those challenges.

“If the British government accepts food and animal regulatory alignment with the EU, we can eliminate the vast majority of difficulties associated with the Protocol.”
