THE people of Derry have had their democratic rights denied by the decision to wipe everyone from the electoral register, Sinn Féin Councillor Sandra Duffy has said.
The party’s lead on Derry City and Strabane District Council was speaking ahead of tabling a motion condemning the move and calling for the city’s local electoral office to be re-opened.
“The Electoral Office need to recognise the detrimental impact that the decision to wipe the entire voter register without consent will have on our citizens by potentially denying them their democratic right.
“Derry City and Strabane District Council has a duty to its electorate to ensure we have an electoral process that is open, transparent and accessible.
“My motion makes clear that this needs to start with the electoral register.
“If passed, my motion will also call for the reinstatement of the local electoral office as, again, the decision to close it was another example of the people of this city being disenfranchised.”
