Commenting at the beginning of ‘Reaching Rural’ week, the party’s Housing Spokesperson said: “Sinn Féin Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey is currently consulting on a draft Housing Supply Strategy which aims to provide equality of provision and access to quality, affordable homes in rural areas as part of a wider revitalisation of our housing sector.
“Sinn Féin recognise the importance of ensuring that rural communities, as well as larger towns and cities, benefit from quality affordable homes delivered to areas in greatest need.
“We also want to see rural housing conditions improved, particularly in the private rented sector, which makes up a sizeable portion of homes within our rural communities.
“Key protections will be included in another piece of legislation which Minister Hargey plans to table before the assembly in the autumn.
“The Private Tenancies Bill will extend notice-to-quit periods, restrict rent increases within 12-month periods and ensure landlords have legal responsibilities for providing working fire and carbon monoxide alarms in their properties.”
