A refresh of the electoral register is currently underway as part of the Northern Ireland canvass, which takes place every ten years.
The latest figures from the Electoral Office have shown poor registration uptake persists in some areas.
Said the Foyle MLA: “A fortnight ago figures released by the Electoral Office showed poor registration uptake within the Foyle constituency with just 24.7% of people here re-registered to vote.
“While there has been some improvement, the Strand ward remains an area with the among the lowest numbers of people on the electoral register across the North.
“I would urge everyone to make sure they are on the register; it takes just five minutes. Securing the right to vote was a hard fought and hard won struggle in this city.
“It is vitally important that people ensure their voice is heard.
“The past 17 months have shown the need for strong, accountable leadership and indeed the three-year political impasse has only served to exacerbate problems here from failures of a cruel welfare system to spiralling hospital and housing waiting lists.
“Politics here is in a state of flux.
“People want action to deliver an ambitious vision for our future.
“The election next year is a chance for people to reject the politics of failure and send a stronger team to Stormont that will deliver for our city.
“This is an opportunity to stand up and be counted, to vote for change,” added Mr Durkan.
