SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has welcomed £16m funding for redevelopment projects in Derry and Strabane.
The funding was provided via the UK Levelling Up Fund and will include: £4.2m for the Daisyfield Community Sports Hub, £5.6m for the Acorn Farm St Columb’s Park Regeneration project and £6.4m for Derg Active.
Councillor Tierney said that while the funding was welcome to support local projects in the area, much more funding was required to reverse the legacy of neglect.
Said the Ballyarnett councillor: “This funding will make a big difference to people across Derry and Strabane allowing these three long-planned projects to become a reality.
“While it has taken some time to secure the funding these hubs have the potential to be transformational for many within our communities.
“All three of these projects will encourage people to get outdoors and keep active and create a stronger community pride and ethos.
“They will provide a central hub in each area for people to congregate and provide an opportunity for people to come together and engage in something positive.
“This long-awaited funding should only be the start for much needed redevelopment projects in this council area.
“For too long the North-West has not received its fair share when money is being dolled out and while this £16m has been warmly welcomed it will take much more than that to reverse the decades of neglect this area has been subjected to,” added the former Mayor of Derry and Strabane,
