McLaughlin: HIA report recommendations must be implemented urgently

SDLP Foyle MLA Sinead McLaughlin

THE SDLP’s Sinéad McLaughlin has said victims of historical institutional abuse have been left feeling abandoned by the Joint First Ministers.

Ms McLaughlin met with victims campaigners in her first meeting as chair of the Executive Office Committee.

In 2017 the Historical Institutional Abuse report said victims should be compensated, given a formal apology and a memorial should be established.

Said the Foyle MLA: “It is disgraceful that four years on from Sir Anthony Hart’s landmark report that victims are still waiting for its recommendations to be put in place.

“Many of these people have campaigned for decades for their hurt and ordeal to be recognised and progress on this important matter has stalled.

“No apology or compensation can make up for what victims have gone through, but it’s the minimum they must receive.

“While feet have been dragged over these last few years a number of victims campaigners have passed away, while others have begun to lose hope they will ever see the recommendations of the Hart report implemented.

“It is essential that the Joint First Ministers make urgent progress on the apology and a suitable permanent memorial.

“The organisations at the centre of the abuse must provide the payments necessary to compensate these victims, if they continue to stall then the Join First Ministers must use their power to compel payments.

“It’s the least campaigners deserve and I will continue to highlight their cause whenever possible.

“Any further delay will only add insult to injury,” added Ms McLaughlin.
