SDLP Councillor for Foyleside Shauna Cusack has called for consideration by those who let their dogs foul where children play.
Said Cllr Cusack: ‘I am constantly being contacted by the residents all over my constituency about the issue of dog fouling in public areas.
“Most recently it was the neighbourhood of Hatmore and Kylemore.
“I took a walk about and can say it has sadly increased on the pavements where many young children play.
“Following a very active anti foul campaign by the previous Mayor Brian Tierney and Council to raise awareness of the dangers and illegality of this behaviour, no one can plead ignorance at this stage.
“It is frustrating that there still exists a handful of people who don’t pick up after their pet or indeed deliberately let them out early morning or late at night to ‘self toilet’ with little care of where they go.
“This is the epitome of anti community behaviour, I would go so far as to call it child abuse, knowing that this irresponsible behaviour can endanger the health of children.
“I have requested the area be scoped for suitable dog bin locations however what we really need is a change of attitude and mindset to make them use the bins.
“We need to make it as unacceptable as smoking in a restaurant and for this, residents have to call ‘foul play’ and report known persistent offenders’.
