A survey earlier this year found that 43% of unemployed people struggle with mental health, compared with 27% of those in work.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Mental ill health has many causes, but lack of work and lack of income can be key factors for many people.
“It is essential that The Executive Office and the Department for the Economy make better progress in delivering jobs for Derry. We have too few jobs, and far too many of the jobs that we do have are low paid.
“The challenge of seeking work that is too often not there and the impact on self-esteem of having job applications rejected are real problems for many people in Derry.
“A good, stable income provides material benefits that are essential for physical and mental well-being.
“And not just for that individual but the whole family. This is why my focus on job creation is also a focus on improving mental and physical health.
“Invest NI must be instructed to attract jobs to the city as a priority, while the First Minister and Deputy First Minister must get on with meeting the obligations they signed-up to in New Decade New Approach for a regionally balanced economy – which means more jobs for Derry, and raising average wages in the city.
“We also need the ministers for education, economy and communities to work together to increase the provision of affordable childcare in Derry – the shortage of which is one of the main factors impeding women’s access to jobs.
“However, additional support for people struggling with mental health are also essential. Fast progress is needed with the promised Addiction Centre NW and I will be seeking an update in the Committee for The Executive Office.”
