Durkan blasts DUP over Bill of Rights blockage

SDLP Foyte MLA Mark H Durkan

THE SDLP member of the Stormont Ad Hoc Committee on the Bill of Rights Mark H Durkan has condemned the DUP for its continued blocking of Bill of Rights legisalation.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am disappointed but definitely not surprised by this turn of events given the DUP’s atrocious record on rights.

“This is typical of their zero-sum approach to just about everything.

“A win for one does not mean a loss for another, that is certainly not the case where the Bill of Rights is concerned, rather this provision is good for everyone.

“I am particularly bewildered by the DUP’s rationale of not wanting to take a separate approach to human rights legislation than that of the UK, given their cherrypicking on numerous rights issues.

“In blocking progress on the Bill of Rights the DUP are effectively denying important human rights protections being enshrined in law.”
