THE SDLP’s Mark H Durkan has written to the Finance Minister Conor Murphy calling on him to install accessible toilet signage throughout Parliament Buildings, Stormont for people with hidden disabilities such as Crohn’s and Colitis.
Mr Durkan said this small move would be a necessary step towards a more inclusive society, helping to erode stigma and raise awareness around invisible disabilities.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Improved toilet signage for people with invisible disabilities is a necessity.
“Research shows that one in two people with hidden disabilities have had negative experiences from members of the public just for using an accessible toilet.
“Accessibility is about much more than wheelchair access it’s important that a more inclusive approach is developed.
“Simple things like signage can make a big a difference and are a necessary step in redefining the stereotypes around disability.
“Clearly education is key and by changing accessible toilet signage at Stormont and in leading by example, we can challenge the stigma.
“By acknowledging that not all disabilities are visible would be one step towards the creation of a more inclusive society.
“I hope Minister Murphy will take on board my proposal which I believe would prove a small, but meaningful step for people living with Crohns, Colitis and other hidden conditions,” added Mr Durkan.
