DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton has urged the Department for Infrastructure to reverse their street lighting policy.
Said Mr Middleton: “Across our council area the Department for Infrastructure has been replacing and removing street lights within housing estates and developments.
“Whilst many residents have concerns about the lack of coverage from the replacement street lights, there are greater concerns about the removal of lights from footways to the rear of dwellings.
“The removal of these street lights has left many areas in complete darkness, increasing safety fears of residents, particularly pensioners and those who live alone.
“I have contacted the Department for Infrastructure about these concerns, urging them to reverse their policy and to prevent further areas facing a similar situation.
“Whilst the initial response from the Department has been disappointing, I have written directly to the Minister for Infrastructure (Nicola Mallon) to ask her to take action and to reverse this damaging policy.”
