SINN Féin Derry representative Conor Heaney has welcomed confirmation that Derry City and Strabane councillors have backed a call on the local council to take legal action over the decision by Edwin Poots to stop checks at ports.
Said Councillor Conor Heaney said: “The attempt by Edwin Poots to halt checks at ports was a reckless stunt.
“Minister Poots knows that his department is legally obliged to comply with the commitments set out in the Withdrawal Agreement and the Protocol.
“Derry City and Strabane has become the third Council to back a Sinn Féin motion raising huge concern over this move and calling on the council to explore legal action.
“We need to see the council beginning legal proceedings to compel the agriculture minister and the British government to comply with their obligations under the Protocol.
“Cynical attempts by a DUP minister to shore up his party’s position before an election over the legal obligations of the Executive are reckless and irresponsible.”
