A £33.9m contract for the project has been awarded following a successful tender.
Said the Foyle MLA: “This is very welcome news and I’m pleased to see progress on this much needed and long-awaited project.
“We are witnessing increased demand for special schools and special education within the Foyle constituency and that is likely to increase further in the years ahead.
“The current school building is not fit for purpose and it is only right that staff, pupils and their families have the assurances of a state of the art facility.
“This development has suffered quite a bit of delay and I have worked hard to push this along in recent years.
“Students and staff will no doubt be excited at the prospect of a brand new building in which they can learn and work.
“It is also great to see the old Foyle School site finally being put to good use.
“This facility is a wonderful and essential addition to our city, I hope things can be expedited now that the contract has been awarded and look forward to its completion.”
