Derry city players celebrates James Akintunde’s late strike against Bohs

SUPER sub James Akintunde sealed another come-from-behind win for Derry City this time at Bohemians.

Ruaidhri Higgins’ comeback kids had to battle back after Liam Burt had given the home side the lead, but second-half goals from Ronan Boyce and Akintunde secured the late, late victory.

The home side started on the front foot and they went close to breaking the deadlock in stunning fashion but Grant Horton’s fantastic long-range strike was tipped over by City keeper Brian Maher.

Derry themselves had a glorious chance on six minutes as Brandon Kavanagh’s teasing right-wing centre into the Bohs six-yard box was inches away from an unmarked Jamie McGonigle.

The hosts then took the lead in fantastic style on 25 minutes as they scored a goal of the season contender when some crisp one touch passing ended with Liam Burt picking up possession from Ali Coote inside the Derry penalty box, before side-stepping past Eoin Toal and drilling the ball home from 10 yards.

Maher was called into action again minutes later this time he did well to parry away Jordan Flores’ 25-yard drive.

Just before the break, McGonigle was inches away from levelling things as the Dungiven man’s 25 yard left-footed strike had to be pushed around the post by a diving Talbot.

The visitors levelled things on the hour mark as Cameron McJannett’s left-wing centre found right-back Ronan Boyce, who ghosted into the Bohs penalty box to head home past Talbot.

Bohs had a good chance to go back in front on 70 minutes as Burt was given a lot of time and space some 20 yards from the Derry goal, but his poor shot was straight at Maher.

Both sides were going all out for the victory and City went close to winning it on 86 minutes but Matty Smith’s well hit left-footed shot had to be brilliantly tipped over by Talbot.

Deep into stoppage time, Patrick McEleney’s left-wing cross was flicked on at the near post and the alert Akintunde was on hand to head home from close range.

Bohemians: James Talbot, Tyreke Wilson, Rory Feely, Ciaran Kelly, Ali Coote (Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe 74), Liam Burt (JJ McKiernan 89), Conor Levingston, Grant Horton, Promise Omochere (Dawson Devoy 74), Jordan Flores, Kris Twardek.

Derry City: Brian Maher, Ronan Boyce, Shane McEleney, Eoin Toal, Cameron McJannet, Daniel Lafferty; Will Patching (Patrick McEleney HT), Cameron Dummigan, Joe Thomson (Matty Smith 55); Brandon Kavanagh (James Akintunde 80), Jamie McGonigle.

Referee: Adriano Reale (Dublin)
