Eastwood: DUP’s ‘hollow’ pledges to help working people

Foyle MP and SDLP leader Colum Eastwood

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has accused the DUP of hollow pledges to help working families after walking out of government and leaving families to face soaring fuel and energy bills with no support.

The Foyle MP was speaking after Firmus Energy announced a 37% gas price increase for 47,000 people.

Said Mr Eastwood: “Faced with an avalanche of soaring energy and fuel bills, families across Northern Ireland need help immediately.

“The announcement of a further 37% increase in gas prices from Firmus Energy today for 47,000 people is another blow for working families who are turning off radiators and putting on winter coats to sit in their own homes.

“I listened in amazement to Jeffrey Donaldson’s meaningless pledge to help working families.

“This is the same man who collapsed our government because of his own collapsing support in opinion polls, robbing us of the opportunity to address this crisis.

“His promises will ring totally hollow to people who know that for the DUP, the party always comes first and the rest of us always come last.

“By contrast, the SDLP actually has a plan to address soaring energy bills, taking on the big oil and gas companies while getting money into the pockets of every home and every family that needs it.

“Everyone knows that our party will always put people first.”
