SDLP Foyleside Councillor Shauna Cusack has asked people who kindly give to foodbanks to consider including dog and cat food in their donations.
Saidi Cllr Cusack: “As we all know many households are finding it tough at this time with the constant increase in fuel and food costs.
“I would like to appeal to the public when making their generous donations to food banks and charities, not to forget the pets.
“Many households, especially in my constituency, now have a dog or a pet of some kind.
“They are like family and as such, those who are struggling, will feed their animal before themselves.
“It’s common knowledge that pet ownership increased considerably during lockdown.
“Now the RSPCA are highlighting how the cost of living crisis is impacting on people’s ability to feed and medically care for their pets with many being placed in shelters who are themselves at breaking point.
“As a dog owner myself I have noticed a concerning increase in the price of their food and naturally this will have a huge affect on struggling pet owners.
“We cannot allow people to have to make a choice between feeding themselves or their pets.
“I would ask that we remember them when making our donations.’
