McAliskey: Vote PBP and demand £1,000 from new Executive

Veteran civil rights campaigner Bernadette McAliskey

Veteran civil rights campaigner Bernadetted McAliskey has urged the Derry public to vote for People Before Profit and demand a £1,000 hardship payment from the new Stormont Executive.

Ms McAliskey has endorsed PBP’s Foyle Assembly candidate Shaun Harkin for the election with takes place on Thursday, May 5.

Polling opens at 7 am and closes at 7 pm.

Said Ms McAliskey “Those already in hardship before the cost of living crisis took off have nothing, absolutely nothing, left in the reserve tank, and are facing catastrophe.

“That is not ‘hot air’ – it is the reality of life right now for growing numbers of individual and family budgets. The people have no breathing space. They need relief from this nightmare.

“After declaring the still continuing Covid crisis over, the Tories cut the £20 per week Universal Credit uplift. Had they not done so, the benefit to families would have been £1040 over the year.

“So, how can a £1,000 hardship payment to get through the immediate impact of this cost-of-living crisis be an unreasonable ‘hot air’ proposition?

“It isn’t.

“Vote People Before Profit and demand your £1,000 from whoever forms the Executive and Assembly.

“It will save them sending it back to the UK Treasury in a year’s time, while people in need go without.”
