A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of his uncle.
Martin Mongan, 20, of Drumard Park in Derry, was arrested following a stabbing in the city on Tuesday.
His solicitor told Dungannon Magistrates’ Court that while he accepted there was enough to connect Mr Mongan to the charge, the evidence against him was “extremely weak”.
The court heard police have so far been unable to approach the accused’s uncle for a statement due to his condition.
A detective constable said while Patrick Stokes, 47, was no longer in a critical condition, he was still receiving treatment in hospital on Wednesday.
She added that police intended to approach Mr Stokes for a statement in the coming days.
Mr Mongan’s solicitor said a bail application would be “inappropriate at this stage” as police have to be allowed an opportunity to speak to Mr Stokes.
He was remanded in custody to Hydebank Wood Young Offenders Centre.
Mongan will appear again in court on June 13 when an application for bail will be made.
