People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said that this week’s arch on Stormont will demand real pay rises for workers and call for immediate hardship action for struggling households.
“The massive cost of living crisis demonstrations in London and Dublin have piled pressure on the political establishment in Westminster and the Dáil to back urgent action for wage and benefit increases in line with inflation, for price caps on key costs and to massively increase taxes on corporations and the super-rich.
“The ICTU organised march and rally on Stormont this Saturday, June 25 will let the political establishment and corporate elite here know immediate action in response to the hardship emergency can’t be delayed.
“Stormont’s cost of living response was brutally inadequate when it was up and running. And now it’s simply criminal for more than £400M to be locked in a Stormont bank account while so many struggle to pay basic costs.
“British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Bank of England chief Andrew Bailey have both recently had the gall to blame workers pay for inflation.
“This is a lie by elites to undermine workers taking action for cost of living pay increases.
“And these lies are being ignored by growing numbers of workers balloting for action to win desperately needed real pay increases.
“Now’s the time to join the march on Stormont to send a unified message from across our communities in support of workers demands for real pay increases, for hundreds of millions in available funding to be immediately utilised to tackle hardship and for a range of radical measures to reduce wealth inequality.”
